You know we love Hip Hop here at Shilo and this is one of the most creative forms we’ve seen in a while. It’s amazing what you can do with a violinist and a DJ. These guys are amazing.

From our very own Joji Tsuruga, we’re pleased to present Lilium Urbanus. In a collaborative effort with Anca Risca, they created this stunning project for their SVA thesis. Joji has gone from superstar intern to full-time artist over here at Shilo! We’re so proud!

Our good friends at WeSC have commissioned my pal Jeffrey Hastings to create a floating garden for the WeSC concept store in LA. Using giant steel hoops braided with seeded soil and hung from the ceiling using clear lines; Jeffrey has created a piece that expresses two important WeSC tenets: activation and interaction. Click here to see some pics of the process and read what WeSC has to say about the project.

We joined forces with an amazing group of people to create this viral public service announcement (PSA). The original purpose of this film was to raise awareness on the Burmese peoples ongoing peaceful protests against their military government’s notorious human rights violations. When Cyclone Nargus hit, causing untold loss of life and devastation across the country, we immediately altered the spot to address the immediate need for aid. We hope to compel the global community to act in the face of this tragedy.
An important goal for each of us, in every project we take on, is getting people to think. With this piece, it is not just a provocation but a call to action. The people of Burma are oppressed: They are not free to express themselves. At Shilo, we are a group of individuals who make art for our livelihoods and we value personal expression as the highest of our freedoms. We are inviting people to join the global conversation about this issue and hopefully we’ll inspire people to make a positive difference for the people of Burma.
In the last few days, the initial point behind the film has become even more relevant as we witness the military regime in Burma block humanitarian aid to people in desperate need of help. We hope this film will motivate people to donate to the current crisis and also to put pressure on the current regime to change things for the better for these peace loving people. Please join us in showing your support for this cause. Here are some helpful sites.

Now up at the Brooklyn Museum, this retrospective of Takashi Murakami’s work is the most comprehensive to date. Check it out!

Found this really great resource of Herb Lubalin’s vast body of work. The work holds up after so many years and we can thank him for some of our favorite typefaces. It’s very easy to spend a lot of time going through each image… enjoy.
Blek le Rat (original street stenciler and provocateur) has a book coming out in May on Thames & Hudson titled “Getting Through the Walls” which covers the past 27 years of his work. Clickety clack to check out a slide show.
“Everytime I think I have painted something slightly original I find out that Blek le Rat has already done it, 20 years earlier.”

Can’t wait for this! As seen on Kanye’s blog (which is really dope by the way).
“ Cinema is a language. It can say things – big, abstract things. And I love that about it. I’m not always good with words. Some people are poets and have a beautiful way of saying things with words. But cinema is its own language. And with it you can say so many things, because you’ve got time and sequences. You’ve got dialogue. You’ve got music. You’ve got sound effects. You have so many tools. And so you can express a feeling and a thought that can’t be conveyed any other way. It’s a magical medium. For me, it’s so beautiful to think about these pictures and sounds flowing together in time and in sequence, making something that can be done only through cinema. it’s not just words or music – it’s a whole range of elements coming together and making something that didn’t exist before. It’s telling stories. It’s devising a world, an experinece that people cannot have unless they see that film.
When I catch an idea for a film, I fall in love with the way cinema can express it. I like a story that holds abstractions, and that’s what cinema can do.”

Other than the amazing Pretty Titty Mix that we posted the other day we’ve been listening to this new mix from The Gas Lamp Killer which we highly recommend. It’s a perfect blend of all the the different musical tastes around the office and is a full hour of head bobbing goodness. The mix is out on Obey Records and you should go buy it right now…
You won’t regret it.

“Ban This”, one of many seminal Powell Peralta skate videos, not only had awesome footage of Ray Barbee, Steve Caballero, and Mike McGill but it also featured these crazy sonic collage pieces made by a never to be heard from again Michael Cook. Heavily influenced by Double Dee & Steinski with less precision and more of the rough charm of something a high school kid would make with two cassette decks, this is the coolest skate vid music ever! I also need to mention that Paul Devro brought this to my attention by ripping these mp3s directly from VHS. So awesome!
